How to Prepare for Pet Euthanasia: A Checklist for Families

Family with their dog in the living room preparing for at-home pet euthanasia

Once you have made the decision to say goodbye to your pet, knowing how to prepare can bring a sense of calm during an emotional time. This checklist will help you and your family get ready for an at-home euthanasia appointment.

Before the Appointment

1. Choose the Right Spot

Pick a location in your home where your pet feels most comfortable. This might be:

  • Their favorite bed or blanket
  • The couch where they always nap
  • A sunny spot on the floor
  • The backyard if they love being outside

Lay down towels or a waterproof pad beneath the blankets, as pets may release their bladder after passing.

2. Decide Who Will Be Present

Think about who should be there:

  • Family members — Anyone who wants to say goodbye is welcome
  • Children — Give them the choice; never force or exclude them
  • Other pets — Some families allow other pets to be present so they understand what happened
  • Close friends — If someone else loved your pet, consider inviting them

3. Take Care of Practical Details

  • Payment — Handle payment before the appointment if possible, so you do not have to think about it afterward
  • Aftercare decision — Decide between private cremation, communal cremation, or home burial (where permitted)
  • Memorial keepsakes — Let us know if you want a clay paw print, ink print, or fur clipping

4. Create Final Memories

In the hours or days before the appointment:

  • Take photos and videos with your pet
  • Give them their favorite treats and foods
  • Spend quiet, quality time together
  • Go for a gentle walk or car ride if they enjoy it
  • Let them do the things they love one last time

5. Prepare the Space

  • Dim the lights if it feels right
  • Play soft music your pet enjoys
  • Have tissues nearby
  • Clear a path from the front door to where your pet will be, so the veterinarian can enter quietly
  • If you have other pets who should not be present, arrange for them to be in another room

During the Appointment

  • There is no rush. Take all the time you need before, during, and after.
  • You can hold your pet, talk to them, and comfort them throughout.
  • Dr. Fasano will explain every step before it happens.
  • The sedation takes 5 to 10 minutes. Your pet will become sleepy and relaxed.
  • The final injection is given once your pet is in a deep, comfortable sleep.

After the Appointment

  • Take as much time as you need with your pet after they have passed
  • If you chose cremation, we will handle transportation with dignity
  • There is no right way to feel. Tears, relief, numbness — all are normal
  • Consider taking the rest of the day off if possible
  • Be gentle with yourself and your family

Things You Do Not Need to Worry About

Some things families stress about that are completely handled:

  • You do not need to bring your pet anywhere — We come to you
  • You do not need medical knowledge — Dr. Fasano handles everything
  • You do not need to be strong — It is okay to cry, and we expect it
  • You do not need to make aftercare decisions on the spot — Decide beforehand or take your time
