At-Home Pet Euthanasia on Long Island

What is at-home pet euthanasia?

At-home pet euthanasia is a veterinary service where a licensed veterinarian travels to your home to help your dog or cat pass peacefully in familiar surroundings. Instead of a stressful trip to a clinic, your pet stays relaxed in their favorite spot — on the couch, in the yard, or in your lap. Dr. Alex Fasano provides this compassionate service to families throughout Long Island, including Nassau County, Suffolk County, and nearby areas. Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is never easy, but at Royal Farewells, we believe their final moments should be filled with peace, dignity, and love. Our at-home euthanasia services provide a gentle, compassionate option for families who want their pets to pass in the comfort of home, ensuring a calm, loving farewell where your pet feels safe and at ease.

Royal Farewells is Long Island’s trusted provider of in-home pet euthanasia. Dr. Fasano — a licensed veterinarian and Long Island native — personally handles every appointment, so your family receives consistent, compassionate care from start to finish. We are available seven days a week, including evenings, because we understand that these moments cannot always wait. By eliminating the stress of a veterinary clinic visit, we help ensure your pet’s final moments are spent surrounded by the people and places they love most.

The Process:

Our at-home euthanasia process on Long Island is designed to be as gentle and stress-free as possible for both your pet and your family. Here is what to expect during a home visit: Dr. Fasano arrives at your home at the scheduled time and takes a few minutes to meet your pet, review their medical history, and answer any questions — there is no rush. A gentle sedative is then administered, usually by injection into the muscle, and within 5 to 10 minutes your pet drifts into a deep, comfortable sleep, completely unaware and pain-free from that point forward. Once fully sedated, the euthanasia solution is given intravenously and the heart stops peacefully within seconds — your pet does not feel anything and simply passes from a deep sleep. There is no time limit afterward; your family can hold your pet, say goodbye, and grieve together for as long as you need while Dr. Fasano steps away to give you privacy. When you are ready, he handles all aftercare logistics, including private cremation with ashes returned, communal cremation, aquamation, clay paw prints, and fur clippings.

Why Long Island Families Choose At-Home Pet Euthanasia

For many pets, a trip to the veterinary clinic causes significant anxiety — especially when they are already sick, in pain, or elderly. At-home euthanasia eliminates that stress entirely. Your pet stays in the place they know and love, surrounded by familiar sights, smells, and the people who matter most.

Here is why families across Nassau County and Suffolk County choose at-home euthanasia with Royal Farewells:

  • No stressful car rides or waiting rooms. Many pets become anxious the moment they get into the car or enter a veterinary clinic. At-home euthanasia removes that entirely.
  • Your entire family can be present. Unlike a clinical setting, your home allows children, family members, friends, and even other household pets to participate in the goodbye.
  • Unhurried, private experience. There are no time limits and no waiting rooms. Dr. Fasano takes as much time as your family needs.
  • One-on-one care with a single veterinarian. Dr. Fasano personally handles every appointment — no rotating staff or unfamiliar faces.
  • Flexible scheduling. We are available seven days a week, including evenings, because loss does not follow a schedule.
  • Complete aftercare coordination. Cremation, aquamation, paw prints, and ashes delivery are all arranged for you.

My husband and I had to make the most impossible decision this weekend and say goodbye to my heart dog and best friend. Having Dr Fasano come to our home was probably the easiest part of that decision. Dr Fasano is the most compassionate and caring doctor I have ever had the pleasure of working with and it was comforting knowing his gentle nature helped calm us through this difficult process.
It was the most private and raw experience and I definitely ugly cried but there is also something beautiful about being able to say goodbye in the comfort of our own home, where my Bailey was not stressed and she was able to be in her own bed surrounded by family and love.

I cannot thank Dr. Fasano enough for his calming, caring and professional manner during one of the hardest times of my life. My 16 1/2 year old yorkie, Chloe suddenly stopped eating and was Deteriorating quickly and as much as I dreaded the decision, I could not stand to see her suffering. I called Dr Fasano to see if he could accommodate a late appointment that day as to give my son time to get home and say goodbye. He told me, unfortunately, he had another appointment and could not let that family down, which I understood. She was suffering so much, I was going to take her to the 24 hour vet but then I got a call from Dr. Fasano saying that he couldn’t get me off his mind and that if I was willing, he would work late and come to me after. I will forever be grateful that my Chloe was able to go in my arms, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by everyone who loved her.

Dr. Fasano and his tech were so wonderful when we had to put our Roxy girl down. He was able to get here the next morning priority and explained how everything would work in a caring manner. When they arrived they were so gentle with her and made her and my kids all feel at ease. They were patient yet worked methodical and we never felt rushed to say goodbye. He handled setting everything up for her cremation and after she was gone still took the to talk to us and make sure everything was good before leaving. A few days later and we already got the text her ashes are ready for pick up. I couldn't recommend Dr. Fasano enough and I am so grateful he was able to make such a hard time a little easier. Putting Roxy down at home where she was happy and comfortable and surrounded by my children was the best decision I could have made rather than taking her to the vet's office.

I knew Dr. Fasano was the right choice for my family’s situation with our dog Cali. After many phone calls, he was the one Vet willing to accommodate our family that very same day. From our first telephone conversation to Dr. Fasano showing up at our home that evening with his Associate Mike, they both showed us so much kindness and compassion. Dr. Fasano explained the process and helped honor our wishes for our dog. If I were ever in this situation again, I would only call Dr. Fasano.

To say we are grateful to Dr. Fasano and his wonderful vet tech to help our CoCo peacefully over the Rainbow Bridge would be an understatement. The person who I thought would come to do this was not able to and the search was on to find someone with same day availability. Dr. Fasano clearly moved his day around to accommodate us and could not have been more compassionate, kind and professional. It is never easy to make these decisions but having him and his colleague there made all the difference in the world and provided a sense of peace. I have already recommended him and his service to two local veterinarians and would do so without reservation to anyone who asks.

This positive experience far exceeded any expectation.
The empathy, professionalism, and efficiency Dr Fasano & his assistant brought to this sad hour provided hard-to-describe relief.
His presence was calming.
Note: Doctor Fasano made himself available on one-hour notice when a well-known LI agency let us down.

Dr. Alex was great! He arrived within an hour of us contacting him, on a Sunday, and he and his assistant were kind, gentle and more than compassionate with such a difficult decision. We will be forever grateful to them for helping our boy crossover the Rainbow Bridge with the utmost dignity and respect that he deserved.
I would highly recommend him for such a sensitive time. 🌈

To say this was the right choice would be an under statement. My dog Madison was with us for 15.5 years and her biggest fear were car rides. The last thing I wanted to do was have her last memories on earth be a car ride followed by a cold vet floor and a steel table to end her life. Dr. Alex was outstanding. From initial phone calls and his schedule flexibility, it made setting everything up seamless. With similar family situations, I think our situation hit more home to him. His compassionate and caring nature and calming voice and approach really made this an absolutely perfect and peaceful time for Madi to head over the rainbow bridge. The ability for someone to be able to do this regularly but still show emotion demonstrates the compassion that Dr. Alex exhibits. Madison left us in my arms, on her comfy bed, with a full belly and surrounded by her entire family in the comfort of her own home, warm and without stress or fear. If there is any doubt or question about how to navigate a challenging time like this, do not hesitate. Reach out to Dr. Alex and have him come in house. It is the only decision and the appropriate one at that for your loved furry family members.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during at-home pet euthanasia?

Dr. Fasano arrives at your home and takes time to meet your pet in a comfortable setting. First, a gentle sedation is given so your pet drifts into a deep, painless sleep. Once fully sedated, the final injection is administered, stopping the heart peacefully within seconds. The entire process takes 15 to 30 minutes, and your family can be present throughout.

Does my pet feel any pain during euthanasia?

No. The sedation ensures your pet is in a deep sleep before the final injection is given. They do not feel any pain, anxiety, or awareness during the process. Most pets simply relax and close their eyes as the sedation takes effect.

Can my whole family be present, including children and other pets?

Yes. One of the greatest benefits of at-home euthanasia is that everyone who loves your pet can be there. Children, family members, friends, and even other household pets are welcome to be present and say goodbye.

How do I know when it is time to euthanize my pet?

Look for signs like chronic unmanaged pain, refusal to eat or drink, inability to stand or walk, loss of interest in surroundings, and more bad days than good. Our guide How Do I Know When It Is Time? can help you evaluate your pet’s quality of life.

What areas do you serve for at-home pet euthanasia?

Royal Farewells serves all of Long Island, including Nassau County, Suffolk County, and nearby areas in Queens and Brooklyn. Dr. Fasano is available seven days a week, including evenings.

What aftercare options are available after at-home euthanasia?

Royal Farewells offers several aftercare options, including private cremation with ashes returned to your home, communal cremation, and aquamation (water-based cremation). Memorial keepsakes like clay paw prints, fur clippings, and decorative urns are also available. Dr. Fasano handles all arrangements so you do not have to.

Can you euthanize a dog or cat at home if they are very large?

Yes. At-home euthanasia is especially beneficial for large dogs who may have difficulty getting into a car or navigating a clinic. Dr. Fasano comes to your home with everything needed, so your pet can stay comfortable in their own space regardless of size. There is no need to transport them anywhere.

What is the difference between at-home euthanasia and euthanasia at a vet clinic?

The medical procedure is the same — gentle sedation followed by a final injection. The difference is the setting. At a clinic, your pet may be anxious from the car ride, unfamiliar smells, and other animals in the waiting room. At-home euthanasia eliminates all of that stress. Your pet stays relaxed in their own home, and your family has privacy and unlimited time to say goodbye. Learn more about the differences.

At-Home Dog Euthanasia on Long Island

Saying goodbye to your dog is one of the hardest decisions you will ever face. Whether your dog is struggling with cancer, organ failure, severe arthritis, or the natural decline of old age, at-home euthanasia allows them to pass peacefully in the place they feel safest — surrounded by the people who love them most.

Dr. Fasano provides compassionate in-home dog euthanasia across Nassau County and Suffolk County. Large breed and giant breed dogs often have the hardest time traveling to a clinic — the car ride itself can cause pain and anxiety. At-home euthanasia removes that burden entirely. Your dog can rest on their favorite bed, in their favorite room, with your family by their side.

The process is gentle and unhurried. Dr. Fasano first administers a deep sedation so your dog drifts into a comfortable sleep. Once they are fully relaxed and unaware, the final medication is given. Most families find this approach far more peaceful than a clinical setting. There is no rush, no waiting room, and no fluorescent lights — just your dog at home, at peace.

If you are searching for at-home dog euthanasia near you on Long Island, contact Royal Farewells to schedule. Dr. Fasano is available seven days a week, with same-day appointments often available for urgent situations.

At-Home Cat Euthanasia on Long Island

Cats are especially sensitive to changes in their environment. A trip to the veterinary clinic can be deeply stressful — the carrier, the car, the unfamiliar smells and sounds. For a cat who is already ill or nearing the end of their life, that stress is unnecessary. At-home cat euthanasia lets your cat stay exactly where they are most comfortable.

Common conditions that lead families to consider end-of-life care for their cat include chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, cancer, heart disease, and the general decline that comes with advanced age. Cats are also known for hiding pain, so by the time you notice significant changes, the illness may be further along than expected. Dr. Fasano can help you assess your cat’s quality of life and guide you through the decision.

During an at-home visit, Dr. Fasano works quietly and gently. Many cats choose to stay in their favorite sleeping spot — a sunny window, the foot of the bed, or a warm lap. The sedation takes effect within minutes, and your cat simply falls into a deep, painless sleep before the final medication is administered. The entire process is calm and dignified.

If you are looking for at-home cat euthanasia near you on Long Island, Royal Farewells serves all of Nassau County and western Suffolk County. Call (516) 646-2172 or visit our appointments page to schedule.
