How to Say Goodbye to Your Dog: Creating a Meaningful Last Day

You have made the appointment. The hardest decision is behind you. Now you have something precious: time to give your dog one last beautiful day.

Here are ideas from the families we have served at Royal Farewells for making your dog’s final hours meaningful.

The Morning

Start Slow

Let your dog wake up naturally. Lie with them. Pet them. There is no need to rush today.

The Special Breakfast

This is the day for all the foods they were never allowed to have:

  • A cheeseburger from their favorite drive-through
  • Bacon and eggs
  • A puppuccino
  • Steak, chicken, or whatever makes their tail wag
  • Ice cream or whipped cream

One family told us they made their dog a full Thanksgiving dinner. There are no rules today.

Take Photos and Video

You will be grateful for these later. Capture their face, their paws, the way they look at you. Record their breathing, their snoring, the sounds that are uniquely them.

The Afternoon

Visit a Favorite Place

If your dog is mobile enough:

  • Take a gentle walk in their favorite park
  • Drive to the beach and let them feel the sand
  • Visit a friend or family member’s house they love
  • Sit in the backyard together

If your dog cannot walk, bring the world to them. Open the windows. Let them smell the air. Sit with them in the sun.

Let Them Be a Dog

Whatever your dog loves, let them do it one more time:

  • Roll in the grass
  • Sniff every mailbox on the block
  • Get belly rubs from everyone in the family
  • Destroy a toy
  • Sleep on the couch they were never supposed to be on

Gather the Family

Let everyone who loves your dog spend time with them. Let the kids sit on the floor and pet them. Let grandma say her goodbye. Let the neighbor who always gave them treats come over.

Before the Appointment

Create Keepsakes

  • Press their paw into clay or ink (we also offer this during the appointment)
  • Clip a small lock of fur
  • Take a nose print
  • Record a video of you talking to them

Write Them a Letter

This is for you as much as for them. Write down what they meant to you. What they taught you. Your favorite memories. You do not have to share it with anyone.

Set Up Their Space

Arrange their favorite blankets in their favorite spot. Surround them with familiar toys and smells. Make it comfortable and warm.

During the Goodbye

When Dr. Fasano arrives, there is no rush. You set the pace. Some families want to begin right away. Others need 20 more minutes. Both are fine.

Hold your dog. Talk to them. Tell them they are a good boy or a good girl. Tell them you love them. They know. They have always known.

After

There is no right way to spend the rest of the day. Some families want to be alone. Others call friends and share stories. Some families go out to dinner and raise a glass. Others stay home and cry.

Whatever you do, know this: you gave your dog the greatest gift. A life full of love, and a peaceful, dignified goodbye at home.
